Leather Terminology

Pigmented

During the raw hide selection process, hides that demonstrate excessive scarring and / or marking are often selected to use as corrected grain product. This process is achieved by buffing or correcting the top layer of the leather and embossing a print into the finished article. Being extremely tolerant to soiling and spillage, corrected grain leathers are ideal for use on furniture in high usage areas, such as family and dining rooms. Commercial applications are also ideal for this leather, particularly office seating.

Semi Aniline

A full-grain leather mainly sourced from Europe. The finish on semi-aniline is very lightly pigmented, but not to conceal the natural characteristics of the hide. Subtle distinctions between the natural grain and pigmentation of the hide surface create and aesthetic quality that is unique to semi-aniline leather. It has an excellent handle, which promises many years of lasting comfort, ideally suited to any living situation and has particular appeal to the commercial and designer market.

Heavyweight Semi Aniline

A full grain semi-aniline leather, offering the luxury of double thickness on the finished article. The finish is of a pebble appearance with an applied sealer coat. As with semi-aniline, it is predominantly sourced from Europe. It has a unique handle, a unique embossed pattern and has obvious durability. Suitable for any application.

Waxed

Usually a full aniline product with a wax top coating, which is applied during the tanning. The raw material is mainly sourced from Europe and each hide will always have a subtle colour variance, even between different areas of the same hide. The waxed surface will absorb the moisture and react to different lighting conditions in a unique manner, developing its own personal character over time, featuring the scarring and shading. A unique product, offered as an alternative to the consumer, which will look and feel better as it ages.

Full Aniline

A full aniline product mainly sourced from Europe. Other than the coloured dye, the appearance of the product is entirely natural. The premium hide selection and unique tanning process helps to create the supple and luxurious feel, which continues and enhances with age. As a full aniline product, each hide will exhibit individual qualities, as the leather is neither buffed nor rolled. The natural veins, stretch marks and pores will be visible and are considered characteristics of the product. It is protected from spillage and making by being drum scotch-guarded at the wet blue stage of tanning. This alternative method enables the hide to still breathe as full aniline. It has an excellent handle and is easy to maintain de to all of its attributes.
